Kedarkantha trek – one of the best destinations to plan a trek

Kedarkantha is a peak located at an altitude of 3,800 meters within the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary of Uttarkashi district. A prominent winter trek in the Garhwal Himalayan region, this trek fulfills all the aspects of the best trek. The trek starts from a small village Sankri which is a very famous place and the trail takes you through picturesque places. There is an abundance of trees, the streams flow through forests and you will come across lush green meadows which will mesmerize you.

Camping here is one of the main reasons which makes this trek a bliss for trekkers, at night the stars fully cover up the sky; you can enjoy stargazing at night. This place is rich in Flora and Fauna here are a variety of birds present in this region, you can spot Himalayan Monal here and Langoor families hanging on trees. Snow-covered peaks glimmer from a distance which attracts the eye of visitors. Bali Pass, Sarutal, Black peak, Swargarohini (I) (II) III), Bandarpooch Peak, Black Peak, Baraadsar Range, Rupin and Supin you will get fetching views of these mountains from Kedarkantha Top.

Divine aura of this place on top, there is Lord Shiva and Ganesh’s temple which makes the environment serene, villagers believe that this place is sacred and visit it every year during their festival.

Getting to the base camp HPMA and Hotel Swargarohini Palace Sankri

Take an overnight train to Dehradun from Delhi. New Delhi-Dehradun A/C special train from New Delhi station is the best option. The train reaches Dehradun at 5.40 am. If you Meet to our office member and drive to Sankri base camp office Har-ki-dun Road Sankri.

By Air

Jolly Grant Airport is the airport serving Dehradun, located about 25 km from the city. There is a daily flight from Delhi to Dehradun

By Bus

There is regular bus service from Delhi to Dehradun, from Delhi, ISBT Kashmere Gate.

We would suggest you take only government buses from ISBT Kashmere Gate. Private buses ply from outside ISBT and they are not trustworthiness.

Usually, buses drop you at Dehradun ISBT. From there you have to come to Dehradun Railway Station to meet us railway station at 6:30 Am.

Itinerary

Day 1Dehradun to Sankri Drive (210 km) (7/8 hours) (1950 meters

Our pick up point is Dehradun Railway station or ISBT, meet us there and then drive towards Sankri you can have your breakfast at Kempty Fall which is a famous picnic spot and is famous for a waterfall. Have your lunch in the middle of your journey at Purola. It’s a picturesque drive to Sankri, you will get fetching views from your window, and the drive will be through Dehradun, Mussoorie, Nainbagh, Damta, Newman, Purola, Mori, Netwar these are beautiful places in the Himalayas.

Sankri lies in Govind Wildlife Sanctuary of Uttarkashi district, it is a village with a mini-market famous for wooden huts that serve delectable food. You will see apple orchards here and greenery all around. Reach Sankri have a glace of snow covered mountains, this place is pollution free, enjoy the invigorating climate. We own a hotel there named “Swargarohini” Relax, have your meal and overnight stay in hotel.

Day 2Sankri to Juda ka Talab (05 Km) (4/hrs) (2700 meters)

Trek starts from Sankri’s mini market, have your breakfast and leave early for Juda Ka Talab with packed lunch. After crossing the hustle and bustle of busy market you enter the area of Forest Department where your I.D’s get checked. When you go further you can see Saur village on your left there are wooden houses which remains cool in summers and warm in winters.

The trail is well marked and cemented and from there you can have glance of mountains, all covered by snow and Swargarohini with “Char Singhs” looks the most beautiful of them all. As you go further now you have to trek off road and the ascend starts, this climb is steep till 1km, make sure you have enough water so that you don’t gasp to breathe. Take breaks and continue your trek, the trail is through beautiful dense forest it is all covered by lush greenery.

You can hear the sound of flowing streams and chirping of birds which makes it pleasurable to trek through these woods. Today’s trek is an ascending one there are short descends. In middle of your trek you will reach a meadow a stream flows on the side, there is a wooden hut of localite which serves Maggie and tea, you can communicate with them and know about their traditional lifestyle.

After spending some time there start your trek it will take two hours to reach Juda Ka Talab, the ascend is steep keep going and you will descend down now you are about to reach Juda Ka Talab. Juda ka Talab is a famous lake amidst a meadow it is crystal clear and the attraction of that place. Reach your campsite explore this place, you will see trees all around, camping here is perfect under the shade of shimmering stars and around this captivating lake. Setup your tents here, explore the beauty and enjoy overnight stay and dinner in tents.

Day 3Juda ka Talab to Kedarkantha base camp (03 km) (2/3 hours) (3400 Meters)

Have your breakfast at Juda Ka Talab and leave for Kedarkantha’s base camp, the trail is beautiful and has got mesmerizing views of snow covered peaks and you can also take the other path of Baniya Thach, it is a short steep climb and has also got scenic views of mountains. The trail takes you through dense pine forest, it is a pleasure to walk through the woods, further this forest ends at a ridge.

After 90 minutes of trekking through the forest of oaks you will reach another ridge, cross that reach you may get tired but then a meadow will unfold in front of you from there the views are magnificent. Now, Kedarkantha summit is visible from here, the snow-capped mountains looks enchanting and the beautiful greenery makes one stare at it as it looks picturesque.

During winter season it remains covered by snow and looks picture perfect, walk over snow and under the shade of oak trees. Continue your trek and after some ascends you will reach Kedarkantha Base Camp, the view of Bandarpooch, Swargarohini, Kala Nag and Rangnala are glorifying and all covered by snow they look fascinating together. This campsite is the most beautiful one and the beauty of this place will leave you spell bound. Enjoy your meal here and overnight stay in tents.

Day 4Kedarkantha base to Kedarkantha summit (12500 feet) (3800 metres)

Morning in Kedarkantha Base Camp is prepossessing and looks stammeringly beautiful, witness the sunrise from there it will make your day. The peaks glimmer from a distance and Kedarkantha Peak is clearly visible from there. Have your breakfast early in the morning and start your trek towards Kedarkantha summit, there are many trails to reach this point you can take anyone.

Maronda Thach a wide meadow, Pokhrola Thach after a gradual ascend it offers majestic views of mountains which are covered by snow and the views of huge waterfalls. This place is rich in Flora and Fauna, you can spot rare species of birds here and a variety of flowers and trees. The last climb to Kedarkantha Peak is steep and it takes energy and efforts to reach there but the efforts are worth going there.

The alluring views of Swargarohini 1, 2, 3, Har Ki Dun valley, Kala Nag, Black Peak stand tall in front of your eyes, the views are panoramic from there and there are temple of Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesh which makes the aura spiritual and divine. Visit those temples spend some time there relishing the beauty of this place then head back to your campsite have lunch there and plan descend to Hargaon.

Day 5Hargaon Thach to Sankri (5 Km) (3/4 hours) (1920 meters)

Have breakfast at your campsite Hargao Thach, you can reach Sankri through many trials there are many options. One of the trail is mostly used which is well marked it will take you through the pine forest and it will end at a ridge from where you can get the mesmerizing views of Har Ki Dun valley which is steeped in mythology.

When you are about to reach Sankri you will see huts lined up properly these are of local villagers. Have your lunch in middle of the trek and continue walking. Reach Sankri’s mini market there is our hotel named “Swargarohini” you can know about their traditional culture and their values. The combination of dark and light greenery is very soothing, have your dinner here and relaxing stay in tents.

Day 6 Sankri to Dehradun (Drive to 210 km) (7/8hrs)

After having breakfast start your journey early so that you can reach Dehradun by 6 : 00 pm
