Kasol is the starting point of Sar Pass Trek

In the local dialect, Lake is called “Sar” on this trek you will pass by a glacial lake named “Sar” and this pass is at an elevation of 13,800 feet. It is in Parvati valley of Himachal Pradesh and the trek starts from Kasol which is a famous tourist destination.

Itinerary

Day 01:- Kasol to Grahan village (2355 m) (10 km) (4/5 hours)

Trek starts from the market of Kasol and further enter the forest and trek along Grahan Nalah. This trail is well made and it is frequently used by the villagers.

Exit the forests section and you will see grasslands and shops run by locals. Juice of Rhododendrons (Burans) is famous there and sold in every shop there.

After a one-hour sheer ascent reach Grahan village it is located on top of the hill. The campsite is a few minutes away from this village, it is a wide ground. Pitch your tents there and comfortably sleep in tents.

Pass through picturesque places and drive is along these sacred rivers, Ganga, Mandakini, and Alaknanda. Reach Joshimath and arrangements will be made in a hotel there.

Day 02:- Grahan village to Min Thach (3433 m) (7 km) (5 hours)

Post breakfast takes the northwards trail, also used by the villagers. Trek for a few minutes and get a surprising view of Sar Top and Min Thach.

Now, the trail is steep and you have to go through a dark forest. Cross it and grassland will welcome you which is present on a ridge. This is Min Thach, you may see some cattle grazing there.

Some phenomenal views from Min Thach are of Chanderkhani it looks extremely beautiful. Other peaks are also visible from there with Nagaru’s campsite. Set up your campsite here and comfortably sleep in tents.

Day 03:- Min Thach to Nagaru Thach (3812 m) (8 km) (7 hours)

Start the trek from Min Thach to Nagaru Thach and go through the jungle which takes you to another ridge, from here a blooming meadow can be seen and at the top is the campsite.

The initial trek is well marked, continue trekking and you will see the receding tree line. Some part of the trail gets because of heavy snow which makes the steep slope slippery. After the hard climb reaches Nagaru.

This place offers the mesmerizing sight of Chanderkhani, Min Thach, Grahan village, the town of Manikaran, Beas and Parvati valley. After sunset the weather gets cold and the winds are strong so after setting camps to retire for the night.

Day 04:- Nagaru Thach to Sar Pass (4211 m) and Biskeri Thach (3344 m) (14 km) (7/8 hours)

The distance to Sar Pass is long so starting early today, trekking on snow will make the climb challenging. But, the scenic views will not leave your side.

Cross a steep ascent to reach the top of the hill from where Tosh valley peaks and snow-covered mountains are visible. Just 2 more hours of the hike will lead you to Sar Pass. Again climb a ridge and from there you can see a Trishul with tied flags.

Now, for climbing the most difficult section you will need ice axe and ropes. Reach the top (4211 m) and the grand views will leave you speechless. Start the descent by sliding down towards a valley visible below.

Come to the gentle slope after the third slide down, reach the levelled part. Start the trek towards Biskeri Thach, through a narrow valley. Cross streams on the way and reach the campsite, from here grasslands, pine forests and high mountains are visible.

You can also have a glance at these villages – Bursheni, Tosh, Nakthan, Pugla and Tugla. After a long trek and great adventure set up the camps and comfortably sleep in tents.

Day 05:- Biskeri Thach to Bursheni and return to Kasol (10 km) (4/5 hours)

Post breakfast starts the descent to Bursheni, the trek is along a stream and then enter a thick forest. The descent through this forest and get down a rope with help of a rope. Across the stream is a campsite go there and towards left the trails go to Pugla.

Further is a beautiful grassland with some trees from here, start the steep descent through the forest and reach Pugla. The two twin villages Pugla and Tugla are separated by a stream. Now, from Tugla cross a bridge over Parvati River.

Bursheni is Parvati valley’s last village and a connected road further leads to Kheerganga, Pin Parvati Pass Mantalai Lake and other treks in Tons valley. Now from here get back to Kasol.
